Jewellery hallmarks: how to read the marks engraved on your jewellery

Small symbols, big information

A hallmark is an official mark engraved on a piece of jewellery that certifies its precious metal content. There are several types: fineness mark (indicates purity), assay mark (official body), maker's mark and date letter.

Hallmarks in Spain

In Spain, the hallmarking system for precious metals is regulated by Royal Decree 197/1988. For gold, the official mark is a five-pointed star with the millesimal fineness number.

UK hallmarking

The British hallmarking system is one of the most comprehensive and oldest in the world. A piece can carry up to four marks: the assay office symbol, the metal fineness, the date letter and the maker's initials.

French hallmarks

France has one of the strictest hallmarking systems in Europe. The French guarantee mark for silver is a head of Minerva — one of the most recognisable systems in the world.
